KS3 Resilience sculpture competition

Resilience is one of Almuñecar International School’s Learning Powers (5 ‘R’s):
Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Readiness, Relationships

Each year, Year 7 studies what these words exactly mean in practise. Resilience is also a scientific word that describes materials and this gave the idea to create sculptures that symbolise resilience in a tangible way.

This academic year, since Year 8 missed out on this project last year due to COVID, both Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to create a sculpture.

At the same time, as the Ukrainian war became the backdrop of our lives,  so we felt  it was a great opportunity to contribute to the school’s fundraising action by making it into a competition.

Students from the whole school are invited to vote for the sculptures.

The prizes ware two cool kites.
We are pleased to announce that the winning entries are from Year 7 KA and Year 9 JH.  There is a special prize for AG who is in Year 10, but entered the competition anyway.

Year 8 Creative and Performance - 3D Printing

3D printing has been an interesting subject to say the least, once you get a hang of things it can be quite easy (although, I do admit, I am not a professional). At first I thought that what I had decided to do was too easy and would take at least 5 minutes, however, that was not the case, at first, using Tinkercad seems simple but then you start getting stressed when something doesn’t work and so on, however don’t let this change your mind, I would definitely recommend this to people who are interested in these types of things.

This term I have learned so much about 3D printing and I have really enjoyed making my design. I have learned about how it works and what is needed to be able to print objects. I have made 3 skyscrapers, a Christmas tree and some other trees for a park. This half term of Creative and Performance has been really fun and I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a mixture of Pekka, Sparky and Mega Knight

I created this  on 9/12/21 and finished today.

A remix of Pekka

How did I do it?

The base is the Pekka and i put thing that I like of Mega Knight and Sparky

I have learnt quite a lot of things during the process of 3D printing, for example the way things get printed and what they get printed out of but also I have learnt to never give up.I had a lot of fun while I was learning. The app we used was Tinkercad and we used that application to design our own things.

In 3D printing i have been doing car logos. I have learnt through this experience that 3D printing is actually a good way to make things.

Designs can take minutes to days to months. 3d printing is older than most people think it has been around since 1980

I had lots off fun and would love to do it again the class used the apps tinkercad it is a really cool app to make your designs.

Year 7 Creative and Performance - Music

Eager reader!

Henri in Year 7 is to be congratulated as the first student who has officially “Blasted Off”.  Blast Off is a scheme that we introduced to encourage students to read in English.  It has been proven that reading for twenty minutes every evening can boost your grade! Henri rose to the challenge and has read ten books in English since September.  Well done Henri.  We look forward to congratulating other students very soon.

Journey to Mars - NASA’s Perseverance Rover

Year 7 and 8 Competition

On the 18th February 2021 NASA landed the Perseverance Rover on Mars.

The following morning, Years 7 and 8 at Almunecar International School began their own mission.

Their challenge was to research the rover landing and to write a single page report on the mission.

With their writing frame and some useful links they endeavoured to complete a magazine report, one page only and in their own words.

The entrants were excellent, providing us with two superb displays for the classrooms and Mr Burrows kindly lent his expertise in journalism to judge the work.

Congratulations to Valeria (Year 7) and Norah (Year 8) for their winning reports. The praise for these reports was very high. There was also two runners up that Mr Burrows felt deserved a mention too, Nuria and Inigo (Year 8).

Well done to all those that participated!

Murder mystery...

Year 7 have been putting their detective skills to work this week in maths in order to solve a murder case! Who knew expanding brackets, solving equations, code-breaking and substitution could prove so useful in cracking the clues! Was the murder weapon the book, the compass, the ruler or the scissors?? It was the scissors!
