Welcome!

Almuñecar International School was founded in 1989 by a small group of highly motivated Spanish parents who wanted a distinct form of education for their children, and an alternative to the options available in the area. Since then the school has grown rapidly and gained full authorisation as a Primary and Secondary school offering education in English and Spanish to pupils in the 3 – 18 age range

In the 21st Century developments are constantly being made; it is a rapidly changing world that we and our children live in. We aim to prepare them for that future in knowledge, understanding, creative thinking and open mindedness so that they become not only caring but successful global citizens. We want them to ask questions and look for their own answers, to think and unlock their full potential. We have implemented the Cambridge International Curriculum in Primary and Secondary. We continue to use the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for our youngest children to explore and investigate, to be cared for in a supportive environment. In Primary and Lower Secondary, the Cambridge International Curriculum is our base for English, Maths and Science. We are following the New English curriculum flexibly for all other subjects. In Years 10 and 11 students study for their GCSEs and in Year 12 and 13 for their A levels. The students also follow the compulsory elements of the Spanish curriculum, Lengua and Cultura española/ Sociales. Our curriculum will continue to evolve to meet the needs of the 21st Century. We strive to be an outstanding school in all respects and to achieve academic excellence.

Our Vision - Roots and Wings

We give our students roots, the nourishing start, the inner values to guide, the firm, foundation on which to build their lives and wings of independence, to explore, to soar, to find themselves and to achieve their goals. We do this by creating a safe, happy, respectful, stimulating and caring environment where teaching and learning are exciting, students are ready to learn and are supported as they develop independence and learn to love learning. Students and teachers form effective working relationships. Our school curriculum is designed to accommodate individual learning styles so that all may have a positive experience. With determination and resilience our students become successful yet responsible, caring global citizens who can communicate effectively in at least two languages.

Our staff and team

One of the best things about Almuñecar International School is our size – being one of the smaller British schools on the south coast of Spain, our school community is very close knit and our staff work as a cohesive team.
Our Leadership Team consists of our Head teacher, Ms Fiona Jacobs, supported by our deputy head, Mrs Kate Reed and our heads of Key Stages.
All our teachers have British qualifications and are experienced teachers, many of whom have been teaching here for many years.
Spanish is taught extensively at AIS and we follow both the British and Spanish curriculums in order to allow our students the opportunity of continuing their educations at universities here in Spain, or the UK, or anywhere in fact. We have ex-students studying in universities in many countries, including the USA.
Our secondary students are taught by specialised teachers in each subject – each class also has a tutor who oversees their personal and academic development and takes the PSHE classes.
Our primary classes are led by a class teacher who teaches all subjects except for some specialised subjects such as ICT and Music.
