French French and German are offered as alternatives in Year 6 and are then compulsory to Year 11 and at least GCSE. They are taught communicatively and emphasis is placed on the 4 skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. We aim to link pupils with pupils in the target-language country when possible, research topics on the internet and watch DVDs and listen to music in that language. KS3. Pupils are introduced to the basic level of the language. By the end of Year 9 they can understand and talk about their home, family, school, where they live and hobbies as well as being able to deal with public transport and asking for information. They can use present, past and future tenses, can describe accurately and give opinions and reasons. KS4 Pupils extend and deepen their knowledge of the above topics. They also talk about relationships with parents and peers. They are able to write extended pieces of about 150 to 200 words and understand the gist from native speakers on feature films. They prepare for GCSE examination in the four skills, developing coursework pieces and a speaking presentation. All four skills are weighted equally in the examination at 25%. The AQA GCSE examination is currently available in 2 tiers, Foundation (Grades C to G) and Higher (Grades A*-D). Most pupils are entered for Higher and in some cases take the examination in Year 10, starting to prepare AS level in Year 11.
