Opening Minds in Year 7,8 and 9

Opening Minds is a dynamic subject that links skills and knowledge from across the curriculum. These include History, Geography, Social Science, Economics, Politics and Art. There is an emphasis on the development of personal competencies such as understanding how each individual learns best, identifying and developing strengths as a member of a group etc.

History in Year 10 and 11

History is the story of the past. Discovering the real past is a problem as History contains many different and competing stories.

The historian’s task is to assess and interpret the fragments from the past, and to view past events from many different perspectives. So our history teaching is rich in the development of critical thinking and thinking skills.

We aim to give pupils the skills to assess the many and changing versions of history; the skills to develop their own version; and an appreciation of the importance of an historical perspective to our cultural life and development.

Our stress on the transferable skills of critical thinking, problem solving, and literacy makes History a valuable career orientated choice at KS4 and KS5. In class a range of different learning styles is used, in order to challenge and motivate students such as role-play, debating, historical games, computer simulations and creating displays.

Extra Activities
